Race Unity Speech Awards

Diksha Mahajan (Year 11) competed in the Upper South Island heat of the Race Unity Speech Awards on Monday night and her presentation earned her third place! We caught up with her for all the details…

Diksha entered the Race Unity Speech Awards as a way to express and share her journey (and sometimes struggles) as an immigrant from India to New Zealand.

The topic for 2024 was ‘Te Taura Tangata’ – ‘The Rope of Unity’, and when asked about the theme, Diksha said, “I shared about my personal experiences…it was about two questions, (1) my struggle and what strength I bring to tighten the rope of unity and (2) how the government and society can support people”.

She started preparing her speech a month ago and presented on Monday night at Auckland Point School in front of supporters and fellow competitors. Her competition was extremely tough, with the winning speech going to Nelson College for Girls and runner-up to Motueka High School.

Congratulations to Diksha on presenting a courageous and thought-provoking speech. We are all really proud of you!
